After several inches of snow quickly piled up across the Stateline area, many communities have declared a snow emergency.
Snow Emergency Goes Into Effect February 15
According to a press release, The City of Rockford declared a citywide Snow Emergency effective at 8 am on Saturday (2/15).
This means parking restrictions will be in place to allow snowplows and public works crews to clear the roads efficiently. Rockford’s Snow Emergency will remain in place until the city officials determine it’s no longer necessary.
Odd/Even Parking Regulations
To ensure safe and effective snow removal from city streets, Rockford residents need to follow odd/even parking rules during the snow emergency:
- February 15: Park on the odd-numbered side of the street starting at 8:00 AM. The side of the street that has homes with odd-numbered addresses (ex: 201 Main Street)
- February 16: Park on the even-numbered side by 8:00 AM.
Vehicles parked on the wrong side of the street during a snow emergency are subject to $60 parking tickets issued by the Rockford Police Department.
Why These Rules Matter
Public works crews need space to maneuver snowplows, and in previous storms, there have been certain problem areas, particularly between 20th and Kishwaukee Street, and from Harrison Avenue to Rural Street.
According to the press release, these areas have been difficult to plow because vehicles are parked on both sides of the street.
Residents in these neighborhoods are encouraged to park off the street or follow the odd/even parking rules to assist snowplow drivers during a snow emergency.
Important Reminders
- Streets marked “No Parking” on one side do allow temporary parking during a Snow Emergency.
- Do not move vehicles immediately after plows pass; cars must remain parked correctly until the Snow Emergency is lifted
- Alleyways will not be plowed by the city or its contractors.
Keep checking back for updates on this snow emergency as this article will be updated when further information is released.
