Authorities say most incidents involved motorists who spun out of control while driving too fast. They urge drivers to slow down, use headlights, and maintain a safe following distance. It is also advised that drivers be aware of all emergency vehicles and pull to the side to allow for a swift response.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya, Public Information Officer for Virginia State Police told News 3, “Right now, there’s not a lot of vehicles on the roadway which is great. Unfortunately, the snowstorm will be passing by and more commuters are going to be out on Friday. So they need to be aware, Friday morning, the road may look clear but a lot of black ice is expected especially on the overpasses.”

Anaya also said most of the crashes have been near exit/entrance ramps.

A few other safety reminders: VSP says pedestrians are prohibited on the interstate, including areas on and off the exit ramps. Sledding should not take place near any roadways, as it could endanger all parties involved.
