Local News: Tesla Recalls Over 370,000 Vehicles for Power Steering Problem

Tesla is recalling over 370,000 Model 3 sedans and Model Y SUVs from the 2023 model year. The recall addresses a potential loss of electronic power steering assist.

This issue can make steering more difficult, particularly at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. The problem may occur when a vehicle comes to a stop and then accelerates again.

Tesla says it started addressing the problem with an over-the-air software update back in October 2023. This update prevents excessive stress on the power steering system’s circuit board.

As of late January 2025, Tesla reports that nearly all affected vehicles in the US have received the software update. Vehicles produced since the update’s release already have the fix.

While Tesla has received numerous warranty claims and field reports potentially related to this issue, the company says it’s unaware of any resulting crashes, injuries, or fatalities.

A federal investigation into the power steering problem began in July 2023, after reports of steering control loss in these Tesla models. This investigation, which includes at least one crash and numerous instances of vehicles needing to be towed, remains ongoing. Tesla owners are expected to receive recall notification letters by mail around March 25, 2025.
