DENVER (KDVR) — A 37-year-old man was convicted by a Denver jury on Monday of killing a Denver Public Schools employee in August 2023.
According to the Denver District Attorney’s Office, Donte Ellis, 37, shot and killed 43-year-old Shayna Johnson in the 3100 block of West Ohio Avenue on Aug. 2, 2023, just before 11:30 a.m.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and felony menacing with a weapon on May 15, 2023, according to court records. The Denver DA’s Office said Ellis was convicted of first-degree murder.
Denver District Attorney John Walsh said Johnson was a beloved mother, friend and special education coordinator who was passionate about improving her students’ lives. The office called her a “longtime Denver Public Schools employee” in its release.
