Influencer Arrested After Deadly Crash

Additional Coverage:

Local influencer Summer Wheaton, 33, was arrested Monday on charges stemming from a fatal drunk driving crash last summer. She surrendered at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station after a warrant was issued.

Wheaton is facing charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence. She was released after posting bond.

The July 4th crash occurred on the Pacific Coast Highway. Authorities say Wheaton crossed the median and hit another vehicle head-on, killing the driver, 44-year-old rideshare driver Martin Okeke.

Reports indicate Wheaton had attended a party at Nobu Malibu before the crash. She has over 100,000 followers on Instagram, where she describes herself as a “wellness advocate.”

The day after her arrest, Wheaton posted Bible verses on her Instagram story. Following the crash, she took a monthslong break from social media, returning in December to promote a “faith-based planner.”

In the promotional video, Wheaton alluded to a difficult period, saying, “The last few months have been hard.” She spoke of finding strength in faith during challenging times. Wheaton has not yet responded to requests for comment.
