Mattel Makes Movie Magic Beyond Barbie

Additional Coverage:

Following the massive success of the “Barbie” movie, Mattel is diving headfirst into filmmaking. The toy company has numerous projects in development, based on its iconic brands.

“Barbie” itself may get a sequel, though director Greta Gerwig has expressed uncertainty. Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, however, sees potential for multiple sequels and spin-offs.

A Barney movie is in the works, with A24 producing and Ayo Edebiri writing the screenplay. The film is expected to have a surreal, artistic feel.

A live-action “Masters of the Universe” is slated for a June 2026 release, starring Nicholas Galitzine and featuring a star-studded cast. Mattel hopes this film will launch a major franchise.

A new animated “Bob the Builder” movie is also planned, featuring Anthony Ramos as the voice of Bob and Jennifer Lopez as a producer.

Other projects include a “Major Matt Mason” movie starring Tom Hanks, a live-action “Monster High” film, and a “Polly Pocket” movie, though the latter’s future is uncertain after Lena Dunham pulled out as director.

An Uno-themed heist comedy is being developed, with Marcy Kelly having penned the script. A true story drama called “Christmas Balloon” is also in the pipeline.

A “gritty” Hot Wheels movie is being produced in collaboration with J.J. Abrams, promising a story with emotional depth.

Marc Forster, known for “World War Z,” will direct a live-action/animated “Thomas the Tank Engine” movie. A Magic 8 Ball horror-comedy is also planned.

Vin Diesel is set to star in and produce a “Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots” movie. An American Girl doll movie is in development, aiming for a “Booksmart” meets “Bill & Ted” vibe.

Even lesser-known Mattel brands are getting the movie treatment. Films based on Big Jim, Chatty Cathy and Betsy Wetsy dolls, Matchbox cars, View-Master, and the TV series “Wishbone” are all in various stages of development. A “Gremlins”-esque movie based on Boglins toys is also planned.
