Local Woman Prioritizes Family After Mother’s Cancer Diagnosis

A local woman has left her career in broadcast journalism to care for her mother after a devastating cancer diagnosis. Minreet Kaur’s mother was diagnosed with myeloma, a rare blood cancer, in September 2023. Although the disease is manageable, it is not curable, prompting Kaur to make a life-altering decision.

“My mom has always been more than a mother to me—she’s my best friend,” Kaur shared. Their close bond inspired her to step away from her dream job to cherish the time they have together. Kaur describes her mother as a vibrant 74-year-old with a youthful spirit.

Kaur’s Sikh faith has played a significant role in her decision, emphasizing the importance of selfless service, or “sewa.” Kaur credits her mother with instilling a deep sense of gratitude and a focus on living life to the fullest.

Following a period of intensive chemotherapy, Kaur’s mother entered remission. To celebrate, Kaur took her mother on a two-week trip to Florida.

The pair visited theme parks, indulged in ice cream, and enjoyed long walks. Kaur described the trip as “the best two weeks of our lives,” noting her mother’s renewed energy and joy.

Now, Kaur focuses on making each day special for her mother. Whether it’s dining out, watching movies, or going for a swim, Kaur strives to create lasting memories. While acknowledging the difficult days ahead, Kaur remains committed to supporting her mother and cherishing their unique bond.
