Increasing number of Florida homeowners say they would skip property insurance: poll

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — An increasing number of Florida homeowners said they would go without property insurance, according to a new poll from the University of North Florida’s Public Opinion Research Lab.

The poll found that the top issue facing Floridians is housing and property insurance costs. If given the choice, 22% of respondents said they would go without homeowner’s insurance.

Dr. Michael Binder, the PORL faculty director and professor of political science, said only 2% of respondents believed housing costs were the most important problem in 2022. In a span of a year, Binder said that number shot up to 25% and seems to be on an upward trend.

“With the high cost of property insurance and growing public concern across the state, it doesn’t shock me that over 20% of homeowners said they’d go without it if they had the choice,” Binder said…
