To best protect yourself from harmful effects of vog, the DOH recommends the following:

- Those with asthma or chronic respiratory disease should have medications readily available and take them as prescribed.
- Those with health effects should contact their medical provider as soon as symptoms develop, if applicable.
- Stay indoors and close doors and windows. Set air conditioners to recirculate.
- Face masks do not protect from sulfur dioxide or vog, but can be effective against inhaling ash or Pele’s hair.
- Do not smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
- Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration.
- Have a family emergency plan.
