The vacant Amazon Fresh building in Eden Prairie, MN, may soon have a new use. A plan is in motion to transform the site into a Lava Island Indoor Playground. This high-energy play center would serve kids and families. The project is still in the planning phase. If approved, it will provide a much-needed indoor entertainment option in the Twin Cities metro area.
What is Lava Island?
Lava Island is an indoor adventure park featuring a variety of attractions that encourage active play. Locations typically include:
- Trampolines for jumping and acrobatics
- Jungle gyms with slides, tunnels, and climbing structures
- Foam pits for soft landings
- Party rooms for birthdays and special events
The company already operates locations in Colorado and Montana, and the Eden Prairie site would be its first in Minnesota.
A Site with a History
Before Amazon Fresh, this area housed Broadmoor Apartments and Castle Ridge Care Center. Broadmoor had 240 apartments, while Castle Ridge provided 82 senior care beds.
In 2019, developers planned a mixed-use redevelopment. They proposed apartments, retail, and a hotel. The Broadmoor Apartments were demolished to make way for new construction.
Amazon’s Unfinished Project
The Eden Prairie City Council originally approved the Amazon Fresh store in 2021, and construction began shortly after. However, by 2022, Amazon had paused its expansion plans, leaving the building unfinished. The exterior and parking lot were completed, but the interior was never developed. By May 2023, the site was listed for sublease, signaling that Amazon had abandoned the project.
Current Status
As of March 2025, the Lava Island project has not received final city approval. Discussions continue between city officials and developers. If approved, the playground could open by late 2025 or early 2026.
Lava Island’s arrival would add a much-needed recreational option for families in the Eden Prairie area. With Minnesota’s long winters, indoor play spaces are in high demand, making this a potential hotspot for parents and kids…
