Oscars Dress Code: Will Stars Toe the Line?

Additional Coverage:

Following Bianca Censori’s sheer gown at the Grammy Awards, speculation has arisen regarding dress code enforcement at other award ceremonies, including the Oscars. The Academy Awards, a celebration of artistic and technical merit in film, are traditionally a glamorous affair. While the Grammys incident sparked conversation, it’s unclear whether similar attire will appear at the Oscars.

In 2021, amidst the pandemic, Oscar producers offered guidance suggesting “Inspirational and Aspirational” attire. While formal wear was encouraged, casual attire was explicitly discouraged.

Interestingly, a 1968 memo for the 40th Academy Awards specified “formal evening gowns, preferably pastel shades” for women and “white tie” for men. This guidance, emphasizing the “dignity” of the event, resurfaced on the Academy’s website in 2015.

However, enforcement seems flexible. In 2022, Kristen Stewart’s unconventional red-carpet attire, while generating controversy, didn’t prevent her attendance. Similarly, Billy Porter’s 2019 ensemble challenged traditional gender norms.

As of now, the Academy has not released an official dress code for the 2025 ceremony, leaving designers and attendees to interpret the unwritten rules of red-carpet fashion.
