Ongoing H-1 Freeway Upgrades in Hawai’i, HDOT Announces Extended Completion Dates Amid Construction Disruptions

The Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) recently updated the public on ongoing improvements to the H-1 Freeway. As the island’s main artery continues to see construction, residents are bracing for disruptions. A variety of projects are currently underway and the schedules for these have been outlined by HDOT — a clear sign for commuters to plan their travel with caution.

One significant project involves the H-1 Pearl City and Waimalu Viaduct. The department notified that deck demolition, along with concrete work is ongoing on the H-1 eastbound between the Hālawa Interchange and the H-1/H-2 split. Work is done on weeknights, Tuesday through Friday and extended over the weekends. The completion has been pushed back to May 2027, marking a delay from the original March 2027 deadline.

Meanwhile, the H-1 Salt Lake Rehabilitation project, which includes paving and guardrail work, sees eastbound closures from 8 p.m. Friday to early Monday morning, and similar timing applies to the westbound direction. The completion date for this project has also been revised, now set for May instead of the earlier expected March 2025 finish line…
