Defense Department layoffs would significantly impact Virginia veterans, Rep. Kiggans says

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia congresswoman is urging Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to ensure veterans are not disproportionately impacted by federal layoffs.

Civilian federal jobs are being cut by the thousands as Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency continues to shrink the federal workforce. On Feb. 21, the Department of Defense announced that 5,400 probationary workers would be fired, followed by a hiring freeze.

“As you are aware, the DoD has laid off thousands of employees, many of whom are veterans who have dedicated their careers to serving our country,” wrote Republican Jen Kiggans in a letter to Hegseth. “These layoffs are not just a loss of jobs but also a loss of the skilled workforce that is essential to ensuring our defense readiness.”…
