“Messiah was beaten” Witness says Mid-State inmate brutally ‘mashed’ before death

Albany — In a new statement on Tuesday night, New York Department of Corrections Commissioner Thomas Martuscello III says thoughts and prayers won’t bring back incarcerated people killed while in custody, and their department needs to create a culture that isn’t based on violence against inmates.

This comes after the Department placed 15 workers on leave in connection with the death of Messiah Nantwi. Governor Kathy Hochul also releasing a statement, saying reports point to, “extremely disturbing conduct leading to his death”, which they say happened on Saturday at Mid-State Correctional Facility.
