Santa Fe, NM – Following the discovery of Gene Hackman, 95, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, deceased in their Santa Fe home, the couple’s two surviving dogs are in temporary care. Authorities found the acclaimed actor and his wife, a classical pianist, in separate rooms of their residence last Wednesday.
Awaiting toxicology reports, investigators have paused their inquiry into the deaths. While the circumstances remain unclear, police confirmed that Mr.
Hackman’s pacemaker last registered activity on February 17th, suggesting he may have passed away approximately nine days before being found. Both bodies were reportedly found mummified.
Adding to the tragedy, a third dog, an Australian Kelpie mix named Zinna, was found deceased and mummified in a bathroom closet. The two surviving dogs, a German Shepherd named Bear and an Akita-Shepherd mix named Nikita, are currently housed at a local boarding facility.
Reports indicate Bear remained by Mr. Hackman’s side, while Nikita was initially hesitant to leave the property.
The couple’s final days remain a mystery. Police are planning to interview several individuals, including Mr.
Hackman’s three children from a previous marriage, to piece together a timeline. The family is reportedly anticipating the toxicology results.
The last public photo of the couple shows them together in March 2024, with Mr. Hackman using a cane and leaning on his wife for support.
The future of Bear and Nikita remains uncertain pending the review of the couple’s wills. They may be rehomed or adopted by a family member.
