NYCHA has issued over 2,400 Section 8 vouchers since waitlist closed

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – NYCHA has issued 2,437 Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers since it reopened the waitlist to 200,000 new applicants in August.

Over the summer, the city opened the Section 8 waitlist for the first time since 2009, which drew over 600,000 applicants. Only 200,000 made it onto the waitlist. NYCHA originally set a goal of issuing 1,000 vouchers a month, contingent on funding and voucher capacity.

In the months since the waitlist closed, 290 vouchers have been used to rent apartments in New York City , according to a spokesperson for NYCHA.
