Outcry and Clarification, Winter Haven PD Responds to Viral Image of Young Girl During Arrest Incident

The Winter Haven Police Department has been embroiled in controversy after images circulated online which depicted a young girl, appearing to be under five years old, lying on the ground with her hands behind her back during an arrest, with a police officer standing over her and her mother, gun in hand. Yesterday, the department swiftly issued body camera footage from the incident in response to the widespread outrage on social media, as The Ledger reported.

In light of the events, the officials from Winter Haven Police explained the young girl had been emulating her mother, who was complying with police officers’ instructions to lie on the ground, the behaviour arose amid the arrest of a male suspect, who was wanted for a disturbance that reportedly involved a weapon, and during this unfolding it seems the child’s reaction was instinctively to mirror her mother’s actions. The officers involved were said to have responded “with an appropriate level of caution with the understanding there was a weapon involved seeking to resolve the situation,” and that at no time was the firearm pointed at the child, as per an update from the police department on FOX 13 News.

Further information surfaced when Winter Haven PD held a press conference on Thursday, stating that although the images triggered an immediate public outcry, nobody was ultimately detained, despite an affidavit being submitted to the State Attorney’s office against the man with the gun for improper weapon display and public fighting; a similar complaint was filed against a market employee involved in the altercation. The Department of Children and Families was alerted about the incident, as the law requires notification when a violent crime takes place in the presence of a minor, and this was confirmed during the media briefing, as mentioned in coverage by WFLA…
