Nashville issues urgent alert as opioid overdose cases surge past critical threshold

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — In the heart of Nashville, the opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities, the city put out a warning about a spike in overdose cases. Recent public health alerts highlight the severity of the situation.

Dr. Anne Melville-Chester, the director of the Metro Public Health Department, says the department recently issued an urgent spike alert after witnessing a trend of overdose numbers. According to Dr. Melville-Chester, a spike alert is triggered when the number of overdoses within 72 hours surpasses the threshold of 24.

The director won’t give specifics on what these people are overdosing on, but a majority of overdose cases in Nashville deal with opioids.
