Maryland delegate pushes bill to detain immigrants with violent pasts as release looms

ANNAPOLIS, MD (WBFF) — At the Statehouse today, lawmakers sounded the alarm over the impending release of dozens of undocumented immigrants in Maryland who have committed violent crimes. Concerns were raised about individuals with previous convictions, including murder, carjacking, and rape, soon to be released from jail. One case involved a person convicted of raping a 12-year-old child in front of a 3-year-old.

“We’re not talking about immigrants trying to improve their life, we’re talking about criminals who’ve already victimized members of our communities. Criminals who shouldn’t walk free in our country,” said Delegate Kathy Szeliga. She is advocating for legislation that would require local correctional facilities to transfer undocumented immigrants to federal authorities if there is a request to detain them. Currently, at least two local jurisdictions in Maryland release these individuals instead.
