Former Toledo police chief to serve as city safety director, mayor says

TOLEDO, Ohio — Former Toledo police chief George Kral will serve as the city’s safety director, Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz announced at his 2025 State of the City address Wednesday afternoon.

Kral’s appointment still needs to be confirmed by Toledo City Council, but Kapszukiewicz said he starts in his new position on Monday.

Kral will assume the public safety responsibilities from Deputy Mayor Karen Poore, who is set to retire at the end of this month. Poore succeeded former Toledo fire Chief Brian Byrd after he retired from the safety director position in 2023…
