Family of man killed in San Diego jail demands second investigation after new evidence revealed

SAN DIEGO — It’s been nearly three years since Ray Vogelman was beaten to death in a San Diego County jail after a fight with several inmates broke out. The oversight committee tasked with reviewing Sheriff’s in-custody deaths plans to announce the Sheriff’s have been cleared of all wrongdoing in the case.

“What we found is that it was a failure to properly designate him, a failure to properly house him and a failure to properly protect him,” Iredale & Yoo Lawyer Gene Iredale said.

But Vogelman’s family disagrees with the findings. They said Sheriff’s knew there was a repeated pattern of violence in Vogelman’s housing module and he should have been housed somewhere safer…
