Man dies saving escaped dog who ran into traffic

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Prince William County Police investigated a crash Friday morning shortly before 6 a.m. involving an escaped dog, a 56-year-old man and a van.

The deadly crash occurred as a man, later identified as Jack Leo Burdette Jr., attempted to catch a dog running loosely through traffic. Burdette, a Woodbridge resident who was not the dog’s owner, managed to catch the dog. But when he crossed Dumfries Road, he was struck by a 2022 Ram ProMaster van traveling westbound approaching Old Stage Road.

The driver, an unnamed 45-year-old man said he did not see Burdette, who was crossing outside the crosswalk. An officer at the scene and another witness provided first aid until emergency services arrived and transported him to the local hospital…
