California breaks ground on state’s first steel mill in over 50 years, Hundreds of jobs created

MOJAVE, CA – California’s first steel mill in over 50 years is coming to Kern County, promising a wave of economic growth and climate-friendly innovation, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office announced.

Pacific Steel Group’s Mojave Micro Mill, a 500,000-square-foot facility, will produce the state’s first zero-carbon emissions steel while creating nearly 700 jobs in the region.

State and local officials gathered Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking of this historic project. Backed by a $30 million California Competes tax credit, the mill is expected to generate $540 million in capital investments. The facility will also dedicate 63 acres to renewable energy and integrate cutting-edge carbon capture technology.
