California may be home to some of America’s most polluted cities , but Jay Leno doesn’t think classic cars are part of the problem, and he’s looking for the government to back him up.
On Wednesday, California State Senator Shannon Grove announced that she was partnering with the former Tonight Show host to introduce Senate Bill 712 to her colleagues in the California State Senate. Informally known as “Leno’s Law,” the legislation would do away with the biennial smog check inspection that is currently required of all cars that were manufactured after 1975, and are registered as collector vehicles.
Grove—who was born in and currently works out of Bakersfield, CA, which tops the list of America’s most polluted cities—was careful to sidestep any mention of that dubious honor in her announcement of the bill. Instead, she and Leno are focusing on the preservation of what Grove described as California’s “rich automotive heritage, with some of the first classic cars rolling off assembly lines right here in our state.”…
