Struggling LA-founded fast fashion chain closes store in SF’s only thriving mall

Forever 21’s long slide from retail powerhouse to obscurity continues, with the brand’s parent company shuttering Forever 21’s Los Angeles headquarters, laying off hundreds across the state and closing multiple Bay Area stores.

Local closures include stores in Concord, Gilroy, Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton, Santa Clara, San Jose and the Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco, according to the East Bay Times . Interestingly, Stonestown is one of the few thriving malls left in the city. Forever 21’s online directory lists 58 stores across the state, but it’s not clear how many will be left after this latest round of closures.

The layoffs include at least 565 employees in Southern California, according to WARN notices filed with the state. Those notices, which are generally required by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act in the event of mass layoffs, cover employees at the Los Angeles headquarters and five retail locations…
