Protestors express concerns about measles outbreak, potential cuts to Medicaid

LUBBOCK, Texas — Protestors lined up outside of Congressman Jodey Arrington’s office along Texas Ave. Friday afternoon, hoping he could see or hear them from his window.

“We needed to step things up a bit,” protest organizer, Elizabeth Jarnagin said. “He should be in his office, and he should look out his window and see that his constituents are not happy with him.”

Some protestors expressed their concerns about Arrington’s response to the measles outbreak in West Texas . They said they don’t believe legislators have done enough to support funding for organizations like National Institutes of Health and the CDC, which they said increases knowledge and awareness about public health to help with outbreaks like the measles.

“As we’re seeing the advent of all these measles cases, it’s time to get real and appreciate this is not the time to cut funding. This is not the time to walk away because we’re starting to see children die and adults die and we can do better,” protestor and former Lubbock Board of Health Chairman Dr. Brian Carr said…
