‘The Abundance of Black Joy’ on display at Southeast Regional Library

Artist Claire Njuguna and poet Daryl Ijaola set out to show art has the power to challenge perceptions, spark conversations and celebrate identity with their series “The Abundance of Black Joy,” now on display through the end of March as part of the rotating art exhibit at the Southeast Regional Library . Njuguna, a Kenyan-American artist and biomedical engineering sophomore at Arizona State University, created the four portraits featured in the series, including a self-portrait.

For her, art has always been more than just a creative outlet — it’s a way to express emotions and connect with others. She described how this project pushed her creatively and deepened her appreciation for “the beauty of the Black community in America.” “The goal of this series is to show how black individuals are so much more than their pain, their stereotypes,” Njuguna said. “The goal of this series is to depict Black joy in the simple and mundane activities of life.” To further enrich the series, Njuguna collaborated with her friend and poet, Daryl Ijaola, a Nigerian-American pre-medical and biomedical engineering junior at the University of Arizona.
