Luxembourg’s Prince Frederik has died at age 22 after a long battle with a rare illness. His father, Prince Robert, cousin of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, announced the young prince’s passing on Saturday, March 8th.

In a moving tribute, Prince Robert shared that Frederik, who had been diagnosed with POLG Mitochondrial disease at age 14, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on February 28th. He described his son’s final moments as filled with courage, compassion, and even humor, as Frederik took the time to say goodbye to each family member individually, leaving them with a “final long-standing family joke.”

Prince Robert recounted a particularly poignant exchange with Frederik, who, despite struggling to speak, asked his father, “Papa, are you proud of me?” Prince Robert reassured his son of his profound pride in Frederik’s contributions, particularly his establishment of The POLG Foundation three years prior. The foundation is dedicated to supporting research and finding a cure for POLG Mitochondrial disease, a rare genetic disorder that affects the body’s energy production and leads to organ dysfunction.

Prince Robert’s tribute included cherished family photos of Frederik with his siblings, Alexander and Charlotte, and his beloved dog, Mushu.
