BBB: Scammers impersonating local companies in online sales scam

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – According to the Better Business Bureau of the Texas Panhandle, local companies have contacted the BBB regarding a sales scam using their business name.

According to officials with the BBB, scammers use a real business name to pretend to sell cars and vintage cars online, and use the name, addresses, and websites from a company to appear convincing. Officials noted they fool consumers into sending money for the purchase, and when the vehicle is not delivered or the consumer loses contact, they call the real company for answers.

BBB officials stated that those who have a company that has experienced calls claiming a consumer purchased a vehicle from their company, should call the BBB to investigate and refer any callers who have been scammed to the BBB. Scammers can go as far as to open bank accounts in the name of real companies and consumers, then send money to these fake accounts, making it look like they paid the real company and warn customers, family members, and friends to never send money to an unknown source.
