Southwest Airlines to start charging baggage fees like rivals

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Southwest Airlines announced Tuesday that it will begin charging baggage fees, something its rivals have been doing for years.

In its 50-year history, Southwest has offered free baggage, but starting May 28, that will change. Customers in the top-tier fare class, or those who are frequent flyers and have “A-List Preferred” status will get two bags free. “A-List” level members and Southwest credit card holders will get one bag free.

In addition, other changes are underway at the airline including assigned seating, extra legroom options, and basic economy fares which will be cheaper but have more restrictions. The airline will also begin selling tickets on Expedia…
