The METRO Gold Line is gearing up to make its grand debut on March 22, marking a significant expansion in the region’s transit network. The new bus rapid transit (BRT) line, which will run between downtown Saint Paul and Woodbury, is the state’s premiere route, featuring a dedicated roadway for buses, as reported by Metro Transit. Offering frequent service from early morning till past midnight, this line aims to streamline the commute across the I-94 corridor, connecting residents with key destinations such as jobs and services.
Enhanced with features like heated stations, lighting, ticket machines, and real-time signage, the Gold Line is set to roll out with regular service. Later this year, the line is expected to upgrade its fleet with five electric buses, adding not only capacity but also a greener alternative to the mix. According to the Metro Council’s recent update, the B Line is also launching on June 14, promising improved service along the busy Route 21 corridor from downtown Saint Paul to Uptown Minneapolis and further on to France Avenue.
The growth in transit-oriented development is all part of a larger strategy. The region reported that between 2009 and 2023, $19.2 billion in development projects – 38% of the region’s total permitted development – fell within half a mile of these high-frequency transit corridors. With this emphasis on transit accessibility, nearly 60,000 multifamily housing units were greenlit in these areas.
