SOUTHERN OREGON & NORTHERN CALIFORNIA — Our spring-like stretch of weather is coming to an end. A winter storm will bring gusty winds, rain and higher elevation snow back to our region for Wednesday. Precipitation will be heavy for parts of our region, especially in the Mt. Shasta area. Snow levels will be coming down into Wednesday, but snow will mainly stay above 4,000′, except in the Mt. Shasta area where snow levels will get lower during the day thanks to heavy precipitation. Snowfall rates could push 1-2″ per hour. Heavy and blowing snow will impact travel in the Mt. Shasta area along I-5 and for Highway 89. Our higher passes in Southern Oregon will also be impacted by periods of heavy snow and gusty winds. On the eastside, the bigger concerns will be for blowing snow. Amounts won’t be as significant as other areas in Southern Oregon and Northern California.
Wet weather will continue into Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, but snow levels will lower down to as low as 1,500′ to 2,000′. Snowfall amounts in our lower elevations will be very light though, mostly a coating to 1″ on mainly grassy surfaces. We’ll see scattered rain and snow showers wrapping up into Thursday evening and night. However, another winter storm will arrive Friday with snow levels down to 1,000′ as precipitation arrives early Friday morning. We’re likely looking at some low elevation and valley snowfall and snow accumulations. This system will be one to watch for travel concerns across much of the region.
