California man sentenced to 20 years after swindling nearly $800,000 in gold bars from elderly Maryland woman

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — A California man was sentenced to two decades in prison after he tried to steal more than $1 million during a gold bar scheme in Maryland, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On Tuesday, March 11, a judge in Montgomery County sentenced 35-year-old Wenhui Sun, of Lake Arbor, Calif. to 20 years in prison. The judge suspended part of Sun’s sentence, so he has to serve 6.5 years.

In October of 2024, Sun pleaded guilty to a theft scheme over $100,000, theft over $100,000, attempted theft over $100,000 and conspiracy to commit theft over $100,000.
