Tumbling tumbleweed days

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Strong winds will sweep across West Texas and eastern New Mexico today with even stronger winds Friday. In addition to stampeding tumbleweeds, blowing dust may result in poor travel conditions in blowing dust.

The westerly wind will gradually ramp up this morning, up to 20 to 30 with gusts around 35 mph by late morning. Speeds will increase to 25 to 35 mph with gusts around 45 mph in the afternoon. Of course, any windy day in the West Texas area is also a NO BURN DAY.

The morning clouds will give way to a sunny but dusty afternoon sky. While not quite as warm as yesterday, temperatures will peak well above average for the date.

This evening mostly clear and windy, then overnight a few clouds and breezy. A west-northwesterly Wind 20 to 30 withs gusts near 40 mph early this evening, diminishing to 10 to 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph late tonight.

A slight drop in wind is anticipated tomorrow, Thursday. However, the afternoon will be quite breezy to low-end windy (15 to 25 mph with gusts near 35 mph). Highs again will be well above average. Continue to refrain from outdoor activities that may involve open flames, create sparks, or extreme heat.

A very strong low-pressure area moving from the Rockies to the Central Great Plains Friday will result in a High Wind Event. Sustained winds will howl with speeds of 40 to 50 mph possible. The peak wind gusts the low pressure generates may exceed 75 mph across at least some of the viewing area Friday afternoon.

Friday’s wind will rival that of last Tuesday. Widespread blowing dust, low visibility, tumbleweeds, and hazardous travel conditions are possible…
