Six Americans imprisoned in Kuwait on drug charges have been released as part of an agreement between the U.S. and Kuwait, a family representative confirmed. While several of the freed Americans are veterans and former military contractors, they have long maintained their innocence, according to crisis management consultant Jonathan Franks, who represents the group.
The agreement is expected to lead to the release of nine more American prisoners in the coming weeks. Kuwait’s drug laws are strict, with potential penalties ranging from lengthy prison sentences to the death penalty.
The release comes as the White House continues to prioritize bringing American prisoners home.
