Dawn Robinson, of 90s R&B group En Vogue fame, reveals she’s been living in her car for the past three years. In a candid YouTube video, Robinson opened up about her unconventional “car life,” hoping to inspire others facing hardship.
“I know people might judge,” Robinson admitted, “but life is life. Being human means being vulnerable.” The singer, who rose to stardom with En Vogue in the 90s, then shared her surprising revelation: “For the past three years, I’ve been living in my car.”
Robinson explained her journey began five years ago in Las Vegas, where disagreements with her mother led her to sleep in her car for a month. A co-manager then convinced her to move to Los Angeles, promising assistance with housing.
However, after eight months in a hotel, Robinson felt manipulated and left. “Sometimes people try to take advantage of you when you’re vulnerable,” she reflected.
In 2022, Robinson packed her belongings and embarked on her “car life” journey in Malibu. Despite initial fears, she embraced the experience.
“I don’t regret anything,” she stated. “It felt like the right thing to do.
I felt free, like I was on a camping trip.”
Robinson detailed the practicalities of car living, such as covering windows and being cautious about interactions. She also emphasized the personal growth she’s experienced.
“I’m learning who I am,” she shared. “I’m glad I made this choice.
I needed to go through this.”
Robinson expressed pride in her resilience and encouraged others to overcome their fears. “Do the scary things,” she urged.
“Push yourself. Be spontaneous.
F— fear.” Despite the hardships, she affirmed, “I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything.”
Although missing her family and connections, Robinson believes this solitary journey is essential for her personal development.
En Vogue, formed in 1989, garnered six Grammy nominations. Robinson initially left the group in 1997 but rejoined for reunions in 2005 and 2009.
