BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Local federal workers and union members gathered to protest proposed layoffs, expressing concerns about their future and the impact on the community.
Pamela Ward, a Social Security worker with 17 years of service, said, “We have to turn in five things that we did. Every week, five things that we did for the American public. We service thousands of people.” Ward fears her career could soon be terminated, adding, “I work here at the social security building and they are proposing to terminate or cost us our jobs. They want to get rid of our whole teleservice center where we talk to the American public on a day-to-day basis. That is—horrendous.”
