SFO food company laying off 835 workers in one of Bay Area’s biggest cuts this year

Gate Gourmet, a food catering company at San Francisco International Airport , is laying off 835 workers after the “recent loss of a customer account,” according to a state filing Wednesday.

The company plans to conduct the layoffs on May 13 and will relocate remaining workers from 645 West Field Road at SFO to a new facility at 868 Cowan Road in Burlingame. The identity of the customer account wasn’t disclosed in the filing, but a Gate Gourmet spokesperson confirmed it was United Airlines, SFO’s biggest carrier.

“This shift will result in workforce changes at the current SFO location, and we are committed to supporting our employees during this process with resources and guidance. We remain focused on delivering exceptional service and strengthening our position as a trusted partner in the airline catering industry,” the spokesperson said. Unite Here Local 2, the union that represents most of the affected workers said a different food vendor, LSG Sky Chefs, is expected to be the new vendor and rehire workers…
