Minnesota schools could face millions in funding cuts as ‘unintended consequence’ of state’s free meals program

SOUTH SAINT PAUL, Minn. — As they work to finalize budgets for next school year, some Minnesota school district leaders are warning of potentially having to lay off teachers, counselors and other staff members due to a shortage in funding.

South St. Paul Schools Superintendent Brian Zambreno describes the issue as an “unintended consequence” of the Free School Meals for Kids Program, which took effect in 2023.
