Winter storm watch: Powerful system brings heavy snow and strong winds to Minnesota

The mega storm hitting the central U.S. on Friday will catch Minnesota on the northern end, bringing heavy snow and blizzard conditions to the west of the state, and possibly severe thunderstorms to the south and the Twin Cities.

A winter storm warning has been issued for the western counties of Minnesota, with a narrow band of heavy snow potentially bringing up to 10 inches of snow through Saturday afternoon.

At its height mid-morning Saturday, snow could fall at rates of 1-2 inches per hour, combining with strong winds accompanying the system that could create blizzard conditions. The National Weather Service says wind gusts could reach 55 mph by Saturday afternoon…
