PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Local fire departments aren’t the only ones getting called to brush fires.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s (DEM) Forest Fire Program helps firefighters tackle wildland fires and tries to prevent them from happening in the first place.

Typically in March, the DEM responds to around 13 wildfires that span about 15 acres of land. So far this month, the department has responded to 15 fires affecting almost 30 acres.
