SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – On top of following a high fire threat, Greene County Emergency Management has also been following a severe storm threat, fielding questions about sheltering at home or in public. If you’re utilizing a public shelter, Deputy Director Darren White says make sure it’s a shelter you can get to quickly.
“If you’re a mile from that storm shelter or a 5 minute drive time… by all means, you can drive to that shelter,” White says. “Those things are very important because if you’re outside of that, you may get caught in your vehicle during a tornado and you haven’t made it to the shelter yet.”
While they provide shelter locations, Greene County does not own or operate any of them. Shelters run by Springfield Public Schools will open as soon as a tornado warning is issued and close 10 minutes after the warning expires…
