Secretary of State Marco Rubio Issues New Trade Threat

Amid escalating trade tensions and the announcement of further tariffs, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a stark warning to American allies on Sunday, declaring, “What we have now cannot continue.”

Speaking on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Secretary Rubio indicated the US may be open to bilateral trade talks with other nations, but only after the Trump administration’s recently imposed tariffs take effect. These tariffs target numerous countries, including key allies such as Canada, Mexico, and members of the European Union.

“This is global. It’s not against Canada.

It’s not against Mexico. It’s not against the EU.

It’s everybody,” Rubio stated. He emphasized that these tariffs are meant to establish a “new baseline of fairness and reciprocity,” after which the US could engage in bilateral negotiations for new trade agreements.

While Rubio didn’t offer specifics about the potential structure of these new deals, he stressed the US’s intention to “reset the baseline” to ensure fair treatment in the global economy.

The financial markets have reacted negatively to the escalating trade war, with some experts raising concerns about a potential recession. Secretary Rubio affirmed that the US would retaliate against any nation imposing retaliatory tariffs.

International Backlash Against US Tariffs

The US tariffs have drawn sharp criticism from international leaders. EU President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the tariffs, stating they are detrimental to businesses and consumers, disrupt supply chains, and create economic uncertainty. She pledged retaliatory tariffs targeting Republican-led states, while also expressing the EU’s willingness to negotiate with the US.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly issued a strong rebuke of the tariffs, stating, “If the U.S. can do this to us, their closest friend, then nobody is safe.” Joly also criticized President Trump’s previous remarks about Canada becoming the 51st state, characterizing them as “disrespectful” and part of a strategy of “economic coercion.” She reaffirmed Canada’s resolve not to be intimidated by these actions.
