Sunday, March 16 forecast: Warm temperatures come with whipping winds ahead of another storm

Storm surveys continue to unveil the extent of Friday night’s outbreak of severe weather. Additional ratings have been given out to tornadoes that raked the region with the biggest tornado in our region near Diaz, AR, where an EF-4 tornado ripped through. This is the first EF-4 tornado to strike Arkansas since December 2021. The information at this point is still preliminary, but it appears that at least 8 tornadoes hit in or near the Ozarks.

The story ahead will be wind, warmth and another powerful storm.

Spring warmth returns for Monday and Tuesday with temperatures climbing into the 70s, possibly even hitting 80° Tuesday afternoon. It’s very rare to have a March with so many 80° days, three so far in Springfield.

The warmth will come with wind and an elevated fire danger. A Red Flag Warning has been posted for areas along and north of I-44 from noon Monday to 8pm.

By Wednesday we’ve got another wind-whipped storm moving through the region. Winds gusts could again top 50 mph and the fire danger will likely be high again. No severe weather is expected, but we will see a big drop in temperatures during the day with readings falling from the 60s and into the 40s during the afternoon. As temperatures get colder by evening, there may even be some snow mixing in with rain that will be sweeping through.

Spring will officially arrive Thursday, and the day will begin with a light freeze followed by chilly afternoon temperatures.

This time of the year, cold snaps don’t usually last, and we’ll be back to spring temperature levels Friday…
