Washoe County Sheriff’s Office warns of scams going around

Another phone scam warning is going around, this time from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials want to remind the public that WCSO will never call and demand money over the phone – not for warrants, fines, missed jury duty or any other reason.

WCSO has provided a list of “red flags” to watch for when it comes to scam calls:

  • Urgent pressure to act immediately, or to keep the call secret
  • Use of real names – scammers may use actual deputy names, but a legitimate deputy can always provide a verifiable name and badge number
  • Fake phone numbers – the official WCSO non-emergency line is (775) 785-9276. Scammers can spoof caller ID to make it look like they’re calling from a real number.
