Storm could bring some rain, possible thunderstorms to Kern County areas on Monday

A third and final storm in a series moves through parts of Kern County Monday through early Tuesday, with valley rain up to .10-.15″ and a chance for thunderstorms. In areas where thunderstorms form, you could see heavy localized rain, small hail, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, and erratic winds.

The big story Monday will be the winds: Gusty winds redevelop in the Kern County desert and adjacent mountain slopes Monday into Tuesday. There is High Wind Warning issued for the Mojave slopes from 11 a.m. through 11 a.m. Tuesday with westerly wind gusts 30-40 mph and gusts up to 60 mph. Winds may blow down trees and power lines, and widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

There is a Wind Advisory for the rest of the eastern Kern County Desert from 11 a.m. Monday through 2 p.m. Tuesday, with westerly winds 20-30 mph and gusts to 50 mph. Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

As for snow: A Winter Weather Advisory in effect for the Sierra Nevada north of the Kern County line until 11 p.m. Monday. Snow is expected at elevations down to 4,000 to 5,000 feet by the afternoon and as low as 3,500 feet Monday evening. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches with locally heavier amounts are possible, with winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
