NEW ORLEANS — The St. Joseph Altar is a Sicilian tradition that originated as a tribute to St. Joseph after prayers for rain ended a severe drought.

To show their gratitude people prepared a table of harvested foods and shared them with the less fortunate.

The altar, often shaped like a cross with three tiers representing the Holy Trinity, features a statue or image of St. Joseph at the highest level, surrounded by flowers. It is created as a promise fulfilled for answered prayers…
