NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some New Yorkers heading into work Tuesday morning may have noticed that wooden benches were missing in their subway station.
That’s because the MTA has removed the benches and replaced them with metal leaning bars, according to the agency. The metal leaning bars are installed at the West 4 th Street subway station.

“You can’t sit down. The fact that you can’t sit down and, you know, just wait for your train. You have to stay and lean against that now,” Jessica, a straphanger, told PIX11 News.
The MTA told PIX11 News that the benches are part of a pilot program. Leaning benches were also installed in New York City subway stations in 2017 and 2021 , according to reports…
