NEW ORLEANS — Two New Orleans police officers found guilty of driving drunk were not only able to keep their positions, but NOPD personnel files show they faced little to no punishment for acting belligerently or lying during their arrests.
Sgt. Kevin Thompson and Senior Police Officer Troy Daliet are two of at least nine DWI convictions of NOPD officers over the last five years that are detailed in internal investigation files. Those were compiled from public records gathered by an independent police watchdog, University of New Orleans chemistry instructor Skip Gallagher.
“They should not be on the force,” said Gallagher, whose analysis of NOPD officers’ payroll records led to a federal probe and the conviction last fall of former Officer Todd Morrell on fraud charges. “These people are supposed to be in charge of enforcing the law, not in charge of breaking the law.”…
