A rather small area of severe weather is forecasted to develop this afternoon and evening over Illinois. As the area of severe storms moves northeast this evening some of those thunderstorms could still be severe in the southwest corner of Michigan.
The Storm Prediction Center’s early morning update shows the combined overall severe weather chances in Michigan, and the three separate types of severe thunderstorm weather of tornadoes, severe wind gusts and damaging large hail.
The weather scenario is a clump of severe storms is likely to develop over central Illinois this afternoon and move northeast into southwest Lower Michigan between 8 p.m. and midnight. The Storm Prediction Center says the seriousness of these thunderstorms initially in Illinois will depend on how much sunshine occurs this afternoon. Sunshine will warm the air and make it more unstable, adding energy to the storms. This also has implications on Michigan’s severe thunderstorm chances.
